| Birth: | May 17, 1931 Harlem New York County New York, USA | | Death: | Mar. 31, 2006 Hartford Hartford County Connecticut, USA | Jazz Musician/Educator. When still in his teens he learned from observing the then happening 52nd street scene. Often he played with his friend Sonny Rollins from 1948 to1949 in a Harlem neighborhood band, encouraged and informally taught by neighbor, pianist Bud Powell. Through Powell, he met bebop pioneer Charlie "Bird" Parker, who became a major influence on the young alto saxophonist. He made his first recording when he was 19 on Miles Davis' Dig album, also featuring Rollins. In the 1950's, he also played with Charles Mingus and Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, experiences that he credited with helping him find his own style. The 1960's saw him release a string of albums which many consider to be classics, under his own name and as a "sideman" on Blue Note Records. He and pianist/composer Freddie Redd acted in, and wrote music for the play "The Connection." His later years were spent concentrating more on education, as a teacher at University of Hartford. He received an American Jazz Masters fellowship, the nation's highest jazz honor, from the National Endowment for the Arts in 2001, occasionally still touring and displaying that instantly recognizable tone and style for which he was cherished.
