Son of George Clarke and Anna Maria (Gregory) Clarke

"George Hyde Clarke died at Hyde Hall at the head of Otsego Lake Saturday afternoon at about 4 o'clock, after an illness of about a year's duration. Last winter he went to New York City for treatment but he was given no hope of recovery by prominent physicians and he returned to his home in May, where he gradually sank until the end. Mr. Clarke was born in New York City fifty-six years ago the last of the present month, a direct descendant in the fifth generation from George Clarke, governor of the Colony of New York under the English crown. He was educated at Harrow School, England, and at the Law school of Columbia University where he was graduated in 1880. He was admitted to the bar in the same year. He never actively practiced his profession, however, having a great liking for farming and settled at the family home there to follow the pursuits to which his taste inclined him. He was a man who numbered his friends in all circles. He took a great interest in politics having stood high in the councils of the Democratic party in the state. At the time of his death he was a director of the First National bank, and a trustee of the Orphan house of the Holy Saviour in Cooperstown ... Surviving are the widow who was Mary Gale Carter of Cooperstown; one daughter, Mrs. Arthur Osgood Choate of New York; three sons, George Hyde, Alfred and Averell; three sisters, Mrs. Oscar Torry, who is now in Cooperstown, Mrs. Cross and Mrs. Entwistle, who reside in England. The funeral was held at Christ church at 11:30 o'clock, Wednesday morning, the Rev. Ralph Birdsall, the rector officiating, assisted by the Rev. Charles W. Schiffer, rector of Grace church, Cherry Valley, who is in charge of the East Springfield church. The Rev. Edward R. Armstrong, rector of Trinity church, Sharon Springs, was in the chancel and assisted at the services at the grave ... Interment was made in Lakewood cemetery."
