Nancy Stranberg Garland, 80, Elizabethton, went home to be with her Lord, Thursday October 23, 2014 at the residence of her daughter and son-in-law, Rosemary and Rick Meredith. A native of Johnsonburg, Pennsylvania, she was a daughter of the late Rheinhold M. and Mary Velma Simcox Stranberg. Nancy was a first generation American on her father’s side. Her grandparents were Swedish immigrants. Nancy was a 1953 graduate of Johnson County High School. She retired from the Community Day Care Center, Elizabethton. She was also a homemaker. Nancy was a member of Grace Baptist Church where she was a former Sunday School teacher and choir member. She was a fifty year member of Maple Chapter #79, Order of Eastern Star, Mountain City. She was a former member of the Carter County Republican Women’s Club. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Norman C. Stranberg and his wife Ladye Stinson Stranberg and James A. Stranberg, a nephew, Gary Clark, a cousin Barbara “Bobbie” Westmoreland.
Survivors include her husband, Vernis Garland; a daughter and son-in-law, Rosemary and Rick Meredith; one grandson, John Meredith, Winter Park, Florida; her nieces and nephews: Peter Stranberg, Ladye Ann Miller and husband Jack, all of Fort Worth, Texas, Jamie Johnson, of Florida and Rick Clark and wife Wanda, Roseville, California and a sister-in-law, Patsy Stranberg, Knoxville; her special cousins: Jean Rambo and husband Bud, Bluff City and Peggy Leonard, Murfreesboro, TN; several great nieces and nephews.
A Graveside service and interment were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, October 26, 2014 in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Mountain City with the Rev. Jim Norman officiating. Music was provided by the Grace Baptist Church Choir. Active pallbearers were John Meredith, Teddy Walsh, Paul Adams, Danny Birkner, Jr., Randy Cook and David Ferguson. Honorary ;allbearers were the 1953 Graduating Class of Johnson County High School, and her church family and member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
