He was the son of Anderson 'Devil Anse' Hatfield, the patriarch of the famous Hatfield family, that was involved in the famous 'Hatfield and McCoy' family feud that lasted for over for over 50 years. The feud that began in the 1860s, started when Johnson began seeing Roseanna McCoy, the daughter of Randolph 'Randall' McCoy. The anger escalated more when Ellison Hatfield, the brother of Anderson was murdered in 1882 by three of McCoy's sons. The feud usually involved guns and by other means. The family members met on June 13, 2003, and signed a peace agreement although the feud had ended a 100 years earlier.
