Journalst, US Government Official. He is best remembered as the spokesman and campaign political advisor for Ronald Reagan in several campaigns. Born Franklyn C. Nofziger in Bakersfield, California, he served in the U.S. Army, received a journalism degree from San Jose State College; spent 16 years as a newspaperman, including eight as a Washington Correspondent for Copley Newspapers in California and Illinois. Advised Reagan in his 1966 gubernatorial campaign for governor of California and then served in his governor's office. Worked for Richard Nixon in the White House and as the executive director of the California Committee to Re-Elect the President in 1972. Advised the Gerald Ford presidential campaign in 1976 followed by a stint as executive vice-chairman of "Citizens for the Republic," a political action committee preparing for Reagan's 1980 presidency and as deputy chairman for finance of "Reagan for President." Worked as Reagan's political advisor in the White House and then was a senior consultant for the 1984 "Reagan-Bush Re-Election Campaign" and a member of the 1985 Inaugural Committee. Also ran political campaigns for Pat Buchanan and Steve Forbes. Investigated and initially convicted (along with others) in 1987 for illegal lobbying in the Wedtech affair (he was the only person convicted), the judgment was overturned upon appeal. An author, he wrote four Western novels; his political memoir, "Nofziger," appeared in 1992. (bio by: Fred Beisser)
