SOUTH BEND - Dr. Harvey A. Bender, 78, passed away late Saturday night. As a member of the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Notre Dame, Dr. Bender taught nearly fifteen thousand students over fifty-two years. In addition to his tenure at Notre Dame, Dr. Bender was also an Adjunct Professor of Medical Genetics at the Indiana University School of Medicine.

The youngest child of the late Oscar and Esther Bender and the brother of Ruth Scott, Harvey Bender was born on June 5, 1933 in Cleveland, Ohio, where he became an accomplished scholar, musician and athlete. In 1956, Dr. Bender married Eileen A. Teper, who preceded him in death.

Dr. Bender is survived by his three children, Leslie C. (Chris Wunder) Bender of Baltimore, MD, Samuel D. (Ellen F.) Bender of New York, NY, Philip M. (Linda Rotunno) Bender of Washington, DC; companion, Rosalind Tucker of Granger, Indiana and eight grandchildren.

Professor Bender received his undergraduate training at Case Western Reserve University majoring in Chemistry and English. His graduate studies in Developmental Genetics were undertaken at Northwestern University where he received both his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. Bender served as a U.S. Public Health Fellow in Genetics at the University of California (Berkeley) and held postdoctoral positions as a Gosney Fellow at the California Institute of Technology and as a Visiting Professor at Yale University Schools of Medicine and Law. At the time of his death, Bender’s research activities involved the Epidemiology of Human Genetic Disease and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.

Dr. Bender was a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a Founding Fellow of the American College of Medical Genetics, a Fellow of Notre Dame’s John J. Reilly Center for Science, Technology and Values and a Life Member of Sigma Xi. He was active in many other professional societies, including the American Association on Mental Deficiency, American Association of University Professors, American Institute of Biological Scientists, American Board of Medical Genetics (Diplomat), American Society of Human Genetics, Genetics Society of America, Indiana Academy of Science, the Radiation Research Society, Society for Developmental Biology and the Society for Values in Higher Education.

He served as the founding Director of the Regional Genetics Center at the South Bend Memorial Hospital, sponsored by the University of Notre Dame, Indiana State Department of Health, Indiana University School of Medicine and the Memorial Hospital of South Bend and most recently served as the Director of the Cancer Genetics & Risk Assessment Center of the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center of South Bend, IN. Professor Bender was elected a Carnegie Scholar by the Carnegie Foundation in 2001 and a Kaneb Teaching Fellow at the University of Notre Dame in 2003. In 2006, the Governor named Professor Bender a recipient of the Distinguished Hoosier Award, one of the highest honors given by the State of Indiana to its citizens.

Professor Bender was a prolific editor and author, for both peer-reviewed journals and the popular press on topics ranging from Genetics and Ethics to the Law and Teaching.

Dr. Bender’s contributions extended far beyond the laboratory and classroom. He twice served as the Director for the University of Notre Dame’s United Way Campaign and was on the Boards of Directors for the Cancer Society of Saint Joseph County, Upward Bound of Saint Joseph County and the Epilepsy Foundation of America.

In addition, Dr. Bender was a powerful advocate for the disabled, both locally and on a national level. His service included acting as the First Vice President of the Board of the Council for the Retarded of Saint Joseph County, the Chairman of the Human Rights Committee of the Northern Indiana State Hospital and the Executive Director of the National Center for Law & the Handicapped.

Bender’s personal interests were wide-ranging. He was a licensed pilot, an East Side Little League Coach, an avid supporter of Chicago’s Lyric Opera and a fifty-year member of Temple Beth-El of South Bend. Dr. Bender treasured his grandchildren Eliza, Madeline, Alex, Thea, Gideon, Chase, Grant and Brooks.

A memorial service will be held at Temple Beth-El on Thursday at 11:00AM.
