Her funeral was held March 23 at the Orient Lutheran Church with the Rev. Junfeng Tan officiating. Burial was in Faulkton Cemetery.
Mary Hagen was born October 23, 1915, to Anna (Haberling) and John Hagen at Orient. She attended school at Orient, graduated from Redfield High School, and from Northern State Teachers College in 1945 with a two-year teaching degree. She started teaching in a one-room country school. She began teaching in Faulkton in 1951. She earned her four-year degree in 1971, after years of summer school and night classes.
She married Francis Bower in 1949. They farmed south of Faulkton. They enjoyed driving trips and traveling with friends.
She was a member of S.D. Educators Association, National Educators Association, Retired Teachers Association, American Legion Auxiliary, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, American Cancer Society and Tuesday Club. She was a lifelong member of Orient Lutheran Church.
She is survivied by a son, Jeff (Virginia); two sisters, Esther Weiss and Annette Hagen; and a sister-in-law, Ethel Hagen.
She was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers, Oscar and Edward; and two sisters, Olga Aiken and Minnie Simmons.
Memorials may be sent to Orient Lutheran Church or the Alzheimer's Association.
