| Birth: | Nov. 9, 1894 Łąka Prudnicka Opolskie, Poland | | Death: | Nov. 5, 1966 Baden-Baden Baden-Württemberg, Germany | World War II German Army General. Born in Gräflich Wiese, Germany (now Łąka Prudnicka, Poland) he was a General of Infantry in Adolph Hitler's Whermacht, serving first as commander of the 48th Panzer Corps, then at the Military Governor of Paris, France. He claimed to have defied the order of Hitler to destroy the city and its landmarks before it's liberation by Allied forces in August 1945, a claim that is in historical dispute. After he surrendered the city on August 25, 1945, he was held in Allied captivity until 1947.
