The right-hander pitched 10 years in the big leagues with the St. Louis Cardinals (1943 to 1944 and 1946 to 1952) and the Pittsburgh Pirates (1952 to 1953). The 6-foot-2, 210-pounder was 9-5 with a 3.95 earned run average during his rookie year. In 1944, he went 11-3 with a 1.34 ERA being entering the military in mid-season. He didn't return until late in the 1946 season. But he was on time to pitch a complete-game victory over the Boston Red Sox in Game 4 of the World Series. He allowed nine hits and three runs, only one was earned, in a 12-3 rout. He had his best season in 1947, when he was 16-5 with a 3.37 ERA, 224 innings pitched, 13 complete games in 31 starts and six shutouts. In 1949, he was 15-8 and a 3.87 ERA. He made the National League All-Star team in 1944, 1947 and 1949. He was injured and was replaced in 1944 and didn't appear in the 1947 game. He pitched one scoreless inning in 1949, but the American League won 11-7 at Brooklyn's Ebbets Field. He was traded to Pittsburgh on May 3, 1952 for pitcher Bill Werle. His lifetime totals were 77-56, 3.83 ERA and 54 compete games in 161 starts. (bio by: Ron Coons)
