Rose was born Rosa Adeline Kuck, second child and first one to be born in America to Henry and Meta Bischof, Kuck. She was likely born in Flora Township in Renville County as passed down by family. The photo to the right was labeled Louis Henry Kuck and an unknown sister. It would only make sense it would be Rosa or Annie. The girl in the photo does not look like other photos of Annie Kuck, Keil as a young woman, so conclude it is likely Rosa. No birth record has been found as yet. She married Charles Theodore Rathke in Minnesota on 22 Feb. 1889 per the Minnesota Official Marriage Index (MOMS)found filed under his middle name of Theodore. Her name got transcribed incorrectly as Rosa Keuck, given to the old cursive K's that often had a loop at the bottom that when read later appeared to say Ke. Per census, She and Charles lived briefly in Redwood Falls, then Sibley, Minnesota before following her parents and siblings out west to Washington State. Research found her brother-in-law Reverend Julius W. Rathke also appears to have moved to Spokane as well and is buried there. It is known that he is related as there is also a passed down family letter that mentions a Reverend Rathke which was the first clue and then proven out via research of Charles parents and siblings. They lived in the Spokane area where Charles appears to have been a builder and contractor for several years before moving with their artistic daughter Mabel to the Los Angeles area in about 1920 where they lived until they all three died. Various records and old family obituaries of their time in California list their residences as Ventura, Venice, Glendale and L.A. A Kuck Family descendant still has a painting that has been signed by Mabel Rathke at age 14.
In receipt of LA County Death Cert that states she was buried at Valhalla Memorial Park (which is now Pierce Brothers Valhalla Memorial Park)appears to list a Manhattan Beach address for the funeral home. Arrangements handled by McCormick Colonial Mortuary. Husband Charles Theodore Rathke and daughter Mabel buried there as well per cemetery staff. It states that she died at L.A. County Harbor General Hospital after a 3 day 8 hr stay. She died from complications of Cerebral Thrombosis and diabetes. She had not had a surgery. She was 81 yrs old, wife of Charles T. Rathke, Father: Henry Kuck, Mother Mata Unknown is how the cert reads.
