Major League Baseball Player. A switch-hitting outfielder-first baseman, he was much-traveled during his 10 years in the big leagues. He played for the Detroit Tigers in 1938 to 1939, the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1940, the St. Louis Browns 1940 to 1942, the Washington Senators and the New York Yankees in 1942, the Cleveland Indians in 1943 to 1945 and back to the Tigers in 1945 to 1947. He had two productive seasons in a row. He batted .284 with the Indians in 1944 with 34 doubles, 16 homers, 80 runs batted in and 98 runs scored. He followed that with .272 with 18 homers, 93 RBIs and a league-leading 112 walks. He was declared a free agent by commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis on January 14, 1940 and then signed with the Dodgers for a reported bonus of $25,000. Brooklyn peddled him to the Browns on May 27, 1940 for outfielder Joe Gallagher. He was on the move again on June 8, 1942 when the Browns shipped him to Washington along with pitcher Bill Trotter for outfielder Mike Chartak and pitcher Steve Sundra. The Senators sold him to the Yankees on August 31, 1942. New York coupled him with catcher Buddy Rosar on December 17, 1942 to Cleveland for outfielder Stormy Weatherly and infielder Oscar Grimes. The Indians sent to the Tigers on April 27, 1945 for third baseman-outfielder Don Ross and second baseman Dutch Meyer. His career totals were .276 with 110 homers and 599 RBIs. (bio by: Ron Coons)
