The left-hander pitched seven years in the big leagues with the Brooklyn Dodgers (1946 to 1951) and the Chicago Cubs (1951 to 1952). After spending three years in the military, he was 29 years old when he broke in with the Dodgers. He was 14-11 during his rookie year with a 2.84 earned run average, 222 innings pitched and 13 complete games. He had his best year in 1947, when he was 17-8 with a 3.63 ERA for 225 innings. He pitched in the World Series that year, starting Game 3 and relieving in Games 5, 6 and 7 with no decisions as the New York Yankees prevailed. He followed with 13-10 and a 3.58 ERA in 1948 and 12-8 with a 4.18 ERA in 1949. He appeared in relief twice in the 1949 World Series as the Yankees won in five. The Dodgers traded him with outfielder Gene Hermanski, catcher Bruce Edwards and infielder Eddie Miksis on June 15, 1951 to the Cubs for outfielder Andy Pafko, pitcher Johnny Schmitz, catcher Rube Walker and infielder Wayne Terwilliger.
