Major League Baseball Player. The shortstop was stuck behind Pee Wee Reese, so the Brooklyn Dodgers sold him to the Pittsburgh Pirates on November 14, 1947. He had begun his big-league career in 1942 with the Dodgers, then served three years in the military. He didn't get much playing time upon his return during the 1946 and 1947 seasons. In 1948 with the Pirates, he led the National League in at-bats and the shortstops in assists. He also attained career highs in batting average (.290), doubles (27), homers (4), runs batted in (51), runs scored (85) and steals (24). He slipped to .244 the next year and was never a regular again. The Pirates dealt Rojek to the St. Louis Cardinals on May 17, 1951 for first baseman Rocky Nelson and infielder-outfielder Erv Dusak. The Redbirds then sold him to the St. Louis Browns on January 24, 1952. The Browns sent him, outfielder Ray Coleman, pitcher Bob Mahoney and $90,000 to Brooklyn on October 14, 1952 for shortstop Billy Hunter, but he never played another game in the big leagues. His eight-year totals showed a .266 batting average, 67 doubles, 13 triples, four homers and 122 RBIs. (bio by: Ron Coons)
