"James R Cosby, a Private of Capt Venable's Company (B) 16 Ga Reg., age __ year 5 feet 10 in high, sallow complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, by profession a farmer, born in the county of Walton and state of Ga and enlisted at Center Hill Ga are(?) on the 13 day of August 1861 by Lt Robt White to serve for the war, was killed in action at Gettysburg, Penn USA on the 2nd day of July 1863."

Affidavit of Ermin Cosby before Justice of the Peace William E. Atkinson, Gwinnett County, Ga, dated May 30, 1864 states that she is "the widow of James R Cosby deceased who was a Private of Captain Venable's Company" and that he was "Killed, Gettysburg Pa on or about the 2nd day of July 1863 leaving dijunent [sic] his widowed wife and that she makes this deposition for the purpose of obtaining from the Government of the Confederate States whatever may have been due the said James R. Cosby at the time of his death, for pay, bounty or other allowances for his service."

The 16th GA Infantry Regiment (also called Sallie Twiggs Regiment) was organized during the summer of 1861. The ten companies were raised in the counties of Columbia, Elbert, Gwinnett, Habersham, Hart, Jackson, Madison, and Walton (although there were members from other counties). Company B was organized at Jackson County, GA and was also known as "Center Hill Guards."
Company B was organized by and initially commanded by Capt Abner Monroe Reynolds. Reynolds was the Master of the local Masonic Lodge and the whole lodge joined the Confederate army one night and went off to war. Reynolds commanded Company B until Sept 14, 1862 when he was killed at Cramptons Gap (South Mountain) near Burkittsville, Md. He was succeeded by Capt J M Venable.
