The story of Purnell's death states his older sister Martha Ann married a man(name Unknown)and one day they decided to go horseback riding. Her new husband was riding a green broke and when they saw "bushwhackers" riding their way, he couldn't get the horse to move so Martha Ann rode home to get help. Purnell jumped on a horse and rode to help his new borther-in-law but he was already being killed and Purnell himself was also killed.
Martha Ann lost both her husband and brother that day. The events in the story took place on 3 October 1863, probably in Arkansas. Purnell was just 16-years-old when he died.
Purnell was probably buried at the Jenkins Bottom Cemetery with his parents. At this time it isn't known where he was buried.
