She was born Dec. 1, 1930, in Elmore, the daughter of Stanley and Ethel McKee Merriam. She attended elementary school in Elmore, and was a 1949 graduate of Peoples Academy. She received her Master's degree in Education from Johnson Teacher's College in 1953. Madge was an elementary school teacher for over 30 years, holding positions in Colchester, Springfield, and Hinesburg schools, which also included 28 years at the Chamberlin School in South Burlington. She was predeceased by her sister, Phyllis Mayo; and brother and sister-in-law, John and Marie Merriam.
