| Birth: | May 27, 1818 | | Death: | Oct. 15, 1873 |  The 9th Mayor of Milwaukee was a Democrat, a merchant; sheriff; police chief. He was one of 8 children born to Eli V. (1772-1858) and Jane Page, natives of CT, in Oneida, County, NY. Before coming to Milwaukee, he opened a general store with his brother-in-law, John Sargeant in Nunda, Livingston, NY. In 1844 with his wife came to Milwaukee where he opened a dry goods store, and earned enough money to retire from his business in 1850. His first wife, Maria Camp (1824-1846), a daughter of a local pipe organ builder died suddenly in 1846, leaving the couple childless. Two years later he married Cynthia Barker, the eldest daughter of Hon. Hiram Barker of Horicon, WI, with whom he had four children. He entered politics in 1846, and was elected sheriff in 1853, he appointed Wm. Beck as his deputy; re-elected in 1854, 1857 and 1859. In 1859 he was elected mayor, and increased expenditures in the public schools and the police department. After leaving office he was an agent for the CT Mutual Life Ins. Co. for about ten years. He served as the city's police chief in 1862-63. In 1862, he was also LT Col of the Twenty-fourth Regiment. He was credited with building up the police force. After 1870 he sold real estate earning enough money to take annual trips to Europe. While on one of these trips, he became ill, and died in Dresden, Sachsen, Germany on Oct. 15, 1873. He was buried there according to his wishes. His first wife, Maria is buried in Milwaukee at Forest Home Cemetery in Section 15 under a sad, forgotten stone.
