Mrs. Ruth Marjorie Appleby Smith, 93 of Taylors, South Carolina and formerly Maryland, passed away on Monday, June 16, 2014 at her home, with family by her side. She was the wife of the late Harry B. Appleby, Sr. and later Wayne R. Smith.
Born on September 26, 1920 in Port Deposit, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Cassius C. and Carrie Payton Diffenderfer. Ruth served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. As a homemaker, Ruth spent much of her time raising the children she loved and admiring God's beauty in flowers. Ruth was active as a pianist at her church for many years.
Ruth is survived by three sons, Robert Appleby of Taylors, SC, Paul Appleby of Snow Hill, MD and Ray Appleby of IA.; three daughters, Sandie Main of Little River, SC, Margie Skiff of Milan, MI, and Linda Epperly of Charleston, WV. Ruth was preceded in death by 2 sons, Harry Bruce Appleby Jr. and Danny Glen Appleby. In addition Ruth had many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 21, 2014 from 10:30 to 11:45 AM at the Mountain View United Methodist Church, 11501 Mountain View Road, Damascus, Maryland. The funeral will be held at 12 noon at the church. Interment will follow in the Montgomery United Methodist Church Cemetery on Kemptown Road in Damascus, Maryland.
