Will Batts
Birth: Jan. 24, 1904
Death: Feb. 18, 1956

Blues Musician. A native of Michigan, Mississippi, he was a talented fiddler, and a member of the intrumental musical group, 'Jack Kelly's South Memphis Jug Band.' The group which included guitar picker Dan Sane, and the jug playing 'Doctor' D.M. Higgs, were known for there blues, vaudeville numbers, reels and rags, and minstrel songs. He at first worked on a farm in his native Michigan, Mississippi, before turning to a career in a music. Soon after the group came together they became very popular in the Beale Street area, before releasing there first recordings in 1933. In 1939 the group released there second and third sessions. Batts worked with a number of Memphis, Tennessee, performers including minstrel singer Frank Stokes, and harpist Big Walter Horton for a 1952 session. Batts contuned to work until his death in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1954, at the age of 51. (bio by: K)
