A native of New Orleans, Louisiana, he was a talented violinist and trombonist, who was a founder and a member of the, 'Original Dixieland Jazz Band,' from 1917 until the group disbanded in 1923. The group was one of the first bands to popularize jazz music. Known as a superb rhythmic player and force in the group, other members included Emile Christian, Nick LaRocca, J. Russell Robinson, Larry Shields, Tony Sbarbaro, and Henry Ragas. He stayed with the band until they disbanded in 1923, and then joined Jimmy Durante's band for awhile, before he retired. In 1936, he returned to music to work with different revival bands, and continued until his death. His recording's include, 'Tiger Rag,' 'Fidgety Feet,' 'Sensation Rag,' and 'At The Jazz Band Ball.' He died in 1963, at the age of 71. (bio by: K)
