Gustafson Dies of Heart Disease
Was Active in Many of City's Affairs
E. V. Gustafson 60, secretary of the Council Bluffs Mutual Building and Loan association and active here in scores of civic projects, died Tuesday, at 10:30 p.m. at the Jennie Edmundson Hospital.
He had been ill since Monday, when he suffered a heart attack at his home in JaRuKa Court.
Gustafson was a native of Varna, Illinois, attended commercial college at Shenandoah, and later went to Bethany College, Lindsberg, Kansas.
He came to Council Bluffs about I908 from Essex and went into office work. He served one term as city clerk in 1916 and in 1918 was named chief clerk for the water works. In 1923, he was named secretary of the of Council Bluffs Mutual Building and Loan Association, later becoming a director in the organization.
Was on School Board
Gustafson served a term on the school board acting as president for one year. He was past local and district president Rotary Club, past president of the Iowa Building and Loan Association and a member of several committees of the United States Building and Loan League.
He was past president of the Council Bluffs Chamber of Commerce and and headed the Committee in 1937-38 which successfully retained the railway mail terminal here after a strenuous battle that reached the floors of congress. He was also active in formation of civic leaders the Back to the Rails movement, was a member of the Elks Lodge, and the Kountze Memorial Lutheran Church of Omaha.
Surviving are a son Dr. Robert E. Gustafson of Norfolk Virginia, a daughter Mrs Arline Twohey of Ottawa Illinois; four grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Homer Liston of Omaha, Miss Myrtle Gustafson, and Mrs. Church both of Oakland California; three brothers Paul of Lindsborg, Kansas, Ansfred of Douglas Minnesota, and Cornelius of Des Moines.
Funeral services will be held Saturday 2 p. m. at Cutler's Funeral Home with burial in Walnut Hill Cemetery. The body will lie in state from Thursday afternoon until the hour of the service.
