History - William emigrated to America as a young man and settled in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. In 1841, while in Pennsylvania, he was baptized in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 1846, he sailed a six month voyage to San Francisco on the Brooklyn with his wife and three children.

In San Francisco, he was first counselor to Sam Brannan, on first city council, and worked as carpenter on some of first homes in that city. William accumulated much gold in the California gold fields.

He traveled to Utah by ox 1849 and gave nearly all his gold to the Church. He was in several of the very early musical and drama groups, such as the Nauvoo Legion Band and the Deseret Brass Band (played clarinet). He served a mission in England 1852-55.

William brought home his mother from Scotland to Utah, as well as Margaret Lochhead, who later became his plural wife. He became a resident of Farmington from 1853 until death. He was a farmer.

William was always active in Church and was a member of Seventy Quorum. He was the author of a 28 page book regarding his experiences with Brannan in 1840's California. He died in 1892 at age 78 in Farmington, Utah.
