Major League Baseball Player, Umpire. He was a National League umpire from 1944 to 1948, but earlier when he played for the Philadelphia Phillies, he hit three homers in a game against St. Louis on September 15, 1922. He was a catcher for 11 years with the New York Giants (1921), the Phillies (1921 to 1926), the Brooklyn Dodgers (1927 to 1929) and the Chicago White Sox (1930 and 1931). The Giants traded him with outfielder Curt Walker, pitcher Jesse Winters and $30,000 on July 25, 1921 to the Phillies for outfielder Irish Meusel. Henline, a right-handed hitter, batted .316 in 125 games in 1922 with 20 doubles, 14 homers and 64 runs batted in. Then he hit .324 in 111 games in 1923 and .284 in 115 games in 1924. The rest of his career he played in fewer than 100 games during a season. On January 9, 1927, he was part of a three-team deal. First, he went with outfielder George Harper to the Giants for pitcher Jack Scott and second baseman Fresco Thompson. Then the Giants peddled him to the Dodgers for pitcher Burleigh Grimes. His career totals were .291, 96 doubles, 40 homers and 268 RBIs. (bio by: Ron Coons)
