Major League Baseball Player. He became the second player in history (the New York Yankees' Tony Lazzeri was the first) to hit two grand-slam homers in the same game. He was a member of the Boston Red Sox, when on July 4, 1939, he connected in the third and sixth innings against Philadelphia in the second game of doubleheader. The right-handed hitter belted four homers and drove in 11 runs that day in a 17-7 and an 18-12 sweep. Three of the round-trippers came in the nightcap. He played for the Red Sox (1938 to 1944) and the Philadelphia Phillies (1946 to 1947). The third baseman's first full year was 1939, when he hit .289 with 33 doubles, 14 homers and 95 RBIs. The following season he batted .285 with a career-high 21 homers and 81 RBIs. In 1941, he hit .279 with a career-high 101 RBIs. He was sold to the Phillies on January 22, 1946. His nine-year totals were .270, 191 doubles, 104 homers, 598 RBIs and 69 stolen bases. (bio by: Ron Coons)
