Carrie Bratsburg dies at 106

Carrie Bratsburg, a resident of the portal-Lignite area since 1902, passed away Monday, her 106th birthday, at her rural Portal home.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m., Christ Lutheran Church, Lignite, with Rev. Stuart Fankhanel officiating. Interment will be in the Portal Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Gordon McEvers, Art Kostad, Wayne Clingman, Bob Ballantine, Dale Hawbaker and August Skalicky.

Carrie Pauline was born April 11, 1877, at Sherman, S. Dak., and was raised on a farm there. She married Andrew Bratsburg at Sherman in 1896. In 1902 they moved to the area southwest of Portal to hpmestead.

She continued to make her home there except for a couple years, when she was forced to leave her home after a heating plant explosion in 1974. During that time, she lived in Lignite. At the age of 99, she returned to her farm south of Portal.

She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church of Lignite, and at one time had been active in the activities of the Short Creek Lutheran Church of Columbus.

Her husband passed away in 1946.

Surviving are three sons, Alvin of Portal, Glen in Idaho and Stanley of Crosby; five daughters, Gina Bratsburg of Seattle, Wash., Clara Bartholomew of Tacoma, Wn. Palma Farrington of South Gate, Ca., Olga Sorrentino of Sherman Oakes, Ca., and Pearl Larsen of Casper, Wyo.; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Reviewal will be today from 3 to 8 p.m. and Thursday from 9 a.m. until noon at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Bowbells.

The family prefers memorials to the American Cancer Society, the North
Dakota Mental Health and Rehabilitation or the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation.
