Train Came Together and Voelker’s
Life Was Crushed Out
Almost Instantly
~
While engaged in coupling two freight cars in the Milwaukee yards at 8 o’clock this morning, Emil Voelker, a switchman, employed by the Milwaukee railroad company was instantly killed by being crushed between the bumpers.

The accident which resulted in Voelkers death, happened on a side track near the shops and it was while he was engaged in trying to get one of the couplings to work properly, that the engine backed up against him and crushed him to death almost instantly. Voelker was standing with his sides turned toward the cars and when the train came together, the coupling which were on a level with his hips, crashed into his body. The unfortunate switchman wore a watch in his left vest pocket. The time piece was pushed into the flesh just above the left hip and made an ugly wound about three inches in diameter. A deep gash was also cut into his right hip where that portion of his body came ibn contact with the bumpers. A few slight bruises and cuts on the arms and abdomen are also visible. Coroner Bennett was notified and after reviewing the remains he empaneled a jury who will make an investigation.

Emil Voelker was about 29 years of age and resides with his wife and one child at 1710 White Street. He had been in the employ of the “Milwaukee” in various capacities for the past five or six years. About a year ago one of his knee caps were broken and he was compelled to seek other employment. Three weeks ago Voelker returned to work as a switchman. He was very popular with all his acquaintances and many expressions of sorrow and regret are heard because of his awful death.
