NORTHFIELD – Floyd A. Baker, 78, died Tuesday, July 3, 2007, at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. He was born in Northfield on Sept. 14, 1928, the son of Clarence and Bertha (Cole) Baker. He attended Northfield schools.

He married Helen Grenier on Dec. 27, 1948, in Northfield.

Mr. Baker has worked in the Northfield and Roxbury area as a dairy farmer and logger for 15 years, prior to working in the granite industry for 30 years. He had worked for Rock of Ages in Barre, Cetrangolo Finishing Works in Northfield and Beck & Beck Granite in Barre, retiring in the early 1990s.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing softball, swimming, playing the Vermont Lottery and cooking Sunday morning breakfast for the family.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Baker of Roxbury; six children, Rosalie Newman and her husband Michael of Umqua, Ore., Paul Baker and his wife Sandra of Leesburg, Fla., Jeannette Messier and her husband Carmie Jr. of Roxbury, Floyd Baker and his wife Karen of Roxbury, Clarence Baker and his wife Violet of Roxbury, Laura Ducas and her husband Chuck Burnell of Northfield; six siblings, Leonard Baker and his wife Rosemae of Waterbury, Bertha "Susie" Burnell and her husband Joe of Waterbury, Harold "Butch" Baker and his wife Carol of Northfield, Joan Buck of Northfield, Morton Baker and his wife Velma of Northfield Falls, Douglas Baker and his wife Geraldine of Atopka, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by two brothers, Duane and Herman Baker.

Visiting hours will be conducted Monday, July 9, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Kingston Funeral Home, 35 Slate Ave., Northfield. A graveside service will follow in the Roxbury Village Cemetery in Roxbury. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Roxbury Fire Department, 175 Roxbury Road, Roxbury, VT 05669.
