Johann Eggert, his wife Dorothea Maria Friderike Krohn and their four children arrived in the New York Harbor aboard the Steam ship Thuringia on Nov. 11th 1871.They settled in Winona, Minnesota. Johann began work on the Winona and St. Peter Railroad bridge in 1872 after it's collapse from the first train crossing attempt in 1871. A skiff containing seven railroad laborers, including Johann capsized and Johann drowned in the accident. He was brought to Woodlawn Cemetery where Rev. Philip Von Rohr performed the funeral services. He was buried in the Potter's field section at the cemetery a month after his death.
