| Birth: | Jul. 1, 1920 Dolomite Jefferson County Alabama, USA | | Death: | Dec. 27, 1967 Birmingham Jefferson County Alabama, USA | Major League Baseball Player. The outfielder tied an American League record by playing for four teams in 1951. The left-handed batter made his big-league debut with the St. Louis Browns in 1946 and played for them until traded with third baseman Bob Dillinger to the Philadelphia Athletics on Dec. 13, 1949 for infielders Frank Gustine and Billy DeMars, outfielders Ray Coleman and Rocco Ippolito and $100,000. On June 25, 1950, the A's left fielder tied an AL record with 11 putouts in a 13-5 victory over the Chicago White Sox. The following year, though, he had to keep his bags packed. On April 30, 1951, the A's traded him to the White Sox as part of a three-team deal for outfielders Gus Zernial and Dave Philley. The other team, Cleveland, received pitcher Lou Brissie from the A's, while the Indians also acquired outfielder Minnie Minoso from the White Sox. The White Sox then sent him and infielder Kermit Wahl to the St. Louis Browns on June 4 for outfielder Don Lenhardt. Then he appeared with his fourth team of the year when the Browns sold him to the Indians on July 19. He was on the move again the next year when Cleveland sold him to the Boston Red Sox. His seven-year lifetime totals were .257 with 22 homers and 197 runs batted in. (bio by: Ron Coons)
