John Chancellor, a British soldier and colonial official, son of Edward Chancellor and Anne Helen Tod, was born October of 1870, Edinburgh, Scotland, and died July 31, 1952, Shieldhill Castle, Lanarkshire, Scotland.. His career in the British Army's Corps of Royal Engineers, service on the North West Frontier, and service as Secretary of the Colonial Defence Committee preceeded his serving as the 20th Governor of Mauritius (13 September 1911- 28 January 1916), Trinidad, and Tobago. He served as the Principal Assistant Secretary to the Committee of Imperial Defence from 1922-1923. In 1928, he became the High Commissioner of the British Mandate of Palestine.

John Chancellor married, 1903, Mary Elizabeth Howard. They had two children. He is a decendant of the Chancellors of Quothquan, a village in Libberton parish, South Lanarkshire, Scotland. The Chancellor family held the lands of Shieldhill, Quathquan since 1432.
