He was a great great grandson of Czar Nicholas I. Romanov created the Romanov Family Association in 1979, and was elected as its president in 1989. Romanov was instrumental in organizing the reburial ceremony for the family of Nicholas II in July 1998, and lobbied the Danish royal family and Russian president Vladimir Putin to allow the reburial of the Dowager Empress Marie Feodorovna in Russia in September 2006.
