Services for Sena Rickels, 98, were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 11,1998 (today), at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Monticello. The Rev. Robert Hannemann officiated at the service. Interment was held at Prairie Hill Cemetery, rural Monticello. Sena Rickels of Monticello died Sunday, Feb. 8, 1998 at the Anamosa Care Center, following a brief illness. Sena Monk was born Dec. 6, 1899 in Wayne Township, Jones County, the daughter of Henry and Maggie Siebels Monk.
She received her baptism on Dec. 20, 1899 and was confirmed April 5, 1914, .both at Wayne Zion Lutheran Church. She attended the rural schools in Wayne Township. On Dec. 1,1920, she was united in marriage with William Rickels at the home of Henry Monk at Langworthy. She worked at the John McDonald Hospital as a cook for 20 years, the Johnson Care Center and worked as an aide to several individuals in the Monticello area. She was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church and a 69-year member of the VFW Auxiliary. Survivors include three sons, Lavern (Marian) of Anamosa, Raymond (Sue) of Mt. Vernon, Donald "Bud" (Mary Anne) of McGregor; two brothers, John Monk of Monticello, George Monk of Hanford, Calif.;
two sisters, Augusta Siebels, Wilhelmina Soper, both of Monticello; nine grandchildren, two step-grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren, five step-great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William on April 6, 1965; four brothers, four sisters and two grandchildren. Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello, was in charge of arrangements.
