Lewistown Sentinel Apr 26, 1909 p1Monday 28p1 Wed 29p1Thurs John Showers of W Fifth St extended who was stricken with paralysis on Saturday afternoon died this morning at 7am without having regained consciousness. Mr. Shower was 74yr old and spent considerable of his time in Harrold, TX where he has a couple sons and daughter engaged in the real estate and cattle business. He has been for a long time a resident of this section of the country, but made frequent trips to the state of TX where he was also interested in real estate and stock raising. Saturday evening he was found in the horse stable in an unconscious condition with the bridle still clutched in his hand showing that he had been in the act of removing the bridle when stricken. His son Ira arrived on train #20 this morning from TX just as few moments too late to see his father alive. JOHN S. SHOWERS was born 07 Dec 1834 in Milroy, Pennsylvania, and died 29 Apr 1909 in Mifflin County Pennsylvania. He married NANCY JANE COULTER 19 Nov 1856 in Kish Valley, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania. She was born 13 Sep 1836 in Milroy, Pennsylvania, and died 05 Jan 1923 in Mifflin County Pennsylvania. JOHN S. SHOWERS left Pennsylvania with his family and migrated to Texas, were he settled in Kaufman County. In 1886 he moved to Wilbarger County, Texas. He purchased land southwest of the town of Vernon. He raised stock, especially horses and mules, in which he took great pride. He also farmed, raising wheat. In the history of Wilbarger County, it is said that JOHN S. SHOWERS was the man responsible for bringing crab grass seed to the county. The story goes that the seed came with the farming implements that JOHN SHOWERS shipped to Wilbarger County from Kaufman County.
