James was the son of Benjamin Lea and Nancy Kerr of Caswell Co., NC. He was a wealthy planter prior to the civil war. He lost two of his sons in the war. After the war, his wealth in land and slaves dissolved, he moved with his wife and children to Hinds Co., MS. Shortly after his death, his wife Margarett moved back to North Carolina where she died in 1908 in Guilford County.
