Major League Baseball Player. The 6-foot-2 right-hander was a three-sports star in Cincinnati, but when he signed with the hometown Reds in 1945, the fans turned against him, booing him unmercifully. This, after he turned down many college football scholarships. He led the National League in issuing walks in 1949, 1950 and 1952. In 1948 he was 11-8 with a high 5.86 earned run average. Then he was 11-12, 10-18, 7-10, 9-11 and 1-6 before being sold to the Philadelphia Phillies on June 12, 1954. The deal came with the understanding the Redlegs were permitted to buy a player from the Phillies before midnight June 15. This they did, acquiring pitcher Karl Drews three days later. "Wehmeier was one of the finest natural athletes we ever had in Cincinnati," Reds general manager Gabe Paul said. The Phillies swapped him and pitcher Murry Dickson to the St. Louis Cardinals on May 11, 1956 for pitchers Harvey Haddix, Stu Miller and Ben Flowers. On May 13, 1958, the Cardinals sold him to the Detroit Tigers. For his 13-year career he was 97-108 with a 4.80 ERA. He gave up 1,806 hits and 852 walks in 1,803 innings with 794 strikeouts. He had 79 complete games in 240 starts, including nine shutouts. He scouted for the Reds from 1959-61. He collapsed and died of a heart attack while testifying in an embezzlement trial in Dallas.  (bio by: Ron Coons)
