An Infielder, he became the first player to ever bat in a major league night game when he came to the plate for the Phillies against the Reds on May 24, 1935. He eventually grounded out to Cincinatti shortstop Billy Myers. The brother of Dino Chiozza, who also appeared for the Phillies in 2 games in 1935, Lou was a tall and very talented player who could play any infield position called upon, and was effective with the bat, as his .277 lifetime average attests to. A mulit-sport star in High School, he suffered a serious knee injury playing football. a knee injury almost wrecked his career, yet he came back from that injury to become one of the fastest men in the National League during his 4 year stay there. Becoming a major leaguer at the tender age of 22, he appeared much older as he had gone prematurely gray, and had the features of a much older man. Lou was one of three brother who were pro ball players. Another brother, Joe, was a career minor leaguer. He was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies while playing for the Memphis Chicks of the Southern Association on October 2, 1933 in the Rule V Draft. He spent 3 seasons in Philadelphia, batting .304 in his rookie season. On December 8, 1936, he was sent to the New York Giants for George Scharein and cash. He finished out his major league career in 1939. In the minors he also player with Vicksburg and Beckley. He later owned a popular liquor store with his brother in Memphis. (bio by: Frank Russo)
