Obituary:

Patrick "Pat" Hampton Backus, 89, of Charleston passed away peacefully on April 1, 2007, at CAMC Memorial Hospital, Charleston.

Born October 14, 1917, in Cynthiana, Kentucky, he was a son of the late Arthur H. Backus Sr. and Mertie Backus. Pat married his longtime childhood friend, Noke Hart, a devoted wife who preceded him in death in 1991. He was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Eleanor; brother, Dana Backus; loving brother, Charles Roy Backus; and sisters, Ezella Sparks and Ethel Smith.

Soon after Pat's birth, his family moved to Gad, now covered by Summersville Lake, where his father established the A.H. Backus General Store. At the age of 8, Pat was put to work driving a fertilizer and grain feed delivery truck. He was so young he had to stand on a box to see over the dashboard.

Pat had a wonderful mechanical mind that enabled him to repair many tractors, cars, and household appliances for many people throughout the years. In 1970, he moved to Charleston where he worked for the CAMC Maintenance Department until he retired in 1982. He was proud of his work there, loved the people, and was loved by all.

He was a self-made man, well respected and loved by all who knew him. He was a very loving and kind man who did not have an enemy.

Survivors include his best friend and loving daughter, ...; granddaughter, ..., and her husband, ...; brother, ...; and sister, ...
