Scientist. A mathematician and physicist, he is principally known for his work on heat and thermodynamics, and for his contributions to electric science and submarine telegraphy. He introduced the Kelvin or Absolute scale of temperature. In 1902 he was awarded the Order of Merit on its institution, having been made President of the Royal Society in 1890 and created a baron in 1892.
