William was the son of William Rufus Hyde and Mary "Polly" Towsley Avery from New York. He married Betsy Meeker in Wood County on 6 September 1851. According to the 1850 census, William had an older brother, Gilbert. William was a farmer. He died from a cerebral hemorrhage at the age of 88 years 5 months and 13 days.
