The left-handed pitcher broke in with Cincinnati in 1944, then spent two years in the military before rejoining the Reds. He was traded along with outfielder Johnny Wyrostek to the Philadelphia Phillies for pitcher Bubba Church on May 23, 1952. He pitched in a total of 18 games for the Phillies in 1952 to 1953 with an 0-1 record. He finished his career with a 13-38 record and 4.95 earned run average. In the early 1970s, an item appeared in a national publication saying he had become a millionaire in the storm-window business in Utah. When contacted about it, Peterson laughed and said, "It's that damn fool Smith (former Reds teammate Frank Smith and prankster). He started that story. I know it. I never saw the article, but I heard about it. I haven't seen that guy for years, but it's his work."
