Priscilla Ann Merkle
Priscilla A. Stevens was born May 6, 1857 at Summerville, Indiana, the daughter of W. F. and Martha Stevens. She removed with her parents to a homestead near Wichita, Kansas, in 1870, traveling by ox train and covered wagon, Priscilla and two older brothers walking most of the way for lack of room in the one wagon of the family. Her mother died in 1871, leaving to her the care of five smaller children. November 22, 1876, she was married to John Merkle, a homesteader residing near the Stevens homestead. To this union seven children were born, two dying in infancy. The five surviving are: Joe Merkle, Maud, Oklahoma; Fred Merkle, Flagstaff, Arizona; Jack Merkle, Norman, Oklahoma; Mrs. R. E. Bowling, Pauls Valley, Okla., and Mrs. Bess O'Halloran, Cordell, Oklahoma. Also by sixteen grandchildren; her step-mother, Mrs. Mattie Stevens, Wichita, Kansas; a sister, Mrs. F. T. Little, Wichita, Kansas; three brothers, G. V. Stevens, Wichita, Kansas; H. A. Stevens, Wichita, Kansas; Frank Stevens, Wichita, Kansas.
In 1877 she removed with her husband to the State of Washington where they lived until 1890 when the family located on a homstead near Norman, Oklahoma, where they have since resided, the husband and father, John Merkle, died April 20, 1915.
Mrs. Merkle joined the Methodist Church in early life and has lived a consistent member. At the time of her death she was a member of the Methodist Church, North, Norman, Oklahoma.
