Major League Baseball Player, Team Executive. The right-handed pitcher spent 14 years in the big leagues with Washington and Chicago in the American League. He went 8-12 and 3-6 with the Senators in 1939 and 1940 and was sold to the White Sox on January 4, 1941. Later that year, on Oct. 11, he married Thelma Robertson Griffith, the adopted daughter of Senators owner Clark Giffith. His best season was 1947 when he was 14-6 with an American League-best 2.42 earned run average. Haynes was traded to Cleveland on November 22, 1948 for catcher Joe Tipton, but the Indians sent him to the Senators on December 14, 1948 along with first baseman Eddie Robinson for pitcher Early Wynn and first baseman Mickey Vernon. He completed his career in 1952 with a 76-82 lifetime record and 4.01 ERA. He then became a coach for the Senators (1953 to 1955) and advanced to vice president in 1956 and executive vice president two years later. He continued in that capacity when the club moved to Minnesota in 1961, remaining until his death. (bio by: Ron Coons)
