US Congressman. Vermont Adjutant General. Completed classical studies prior to entering college. Graduate, Dartmouth College, 1808. Taught at Chesterfield Academy, Chesterfield, New Hampshire. Studied law. Admitted to bar, December 1811. Commenced practice, 1812. Married Abigail Stone of Chesterfield, February 4, 1812. Admitted to Vermont bar, Lyndon, 1814. Vermont House, 1819-24, serving as Speaker in final term. Caledonia County State's Attorney, 1820-29. Highly regarded attorney and instructor, training in his office more than 30 law students. Delegate, State constitutional convention, 1822. Adjutant General, Vermont militia, 1824-25. Graduate, University of Vermont, 1825. Elected to Congress as a Democrat, 1836. Served March 4, 1837 to March 3, 1841. Chairman, Committee on Patents. Unsuccessful candidate for reelection, 1840. Health declined rapidly during final term in Congress and after return to Lyndon. Poor health attributed by doctors to overwork. Wife died in Lyndon, July 24, 1858. One son, Charles B. Fletcher, who became a lawyer and practiced in New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Vermont before dying of tuberculosis at age 34.
