Maxine was born Maxine Elizabeth Beeney, the daughter of George Benton Beeney (1890-1970) and his wife Gladys. George and Gladys were young when they were married and had Maxine; and their marriage suffered many difficulties. Because of this, their marriage came to an end about a month after Maxine's birth. George and Gladys subsequently put Maxine up for adoption. Knowing a couple that wanted a child, but had not been able to have one of their own by this time, George made them aware of his daughter. This couple, William P. Davis (1876-1960) and his wife Mary Williams (1883-1968), adopted Maxine on the 25 February 1912.

When she was in her teens, she discovered some old papers belonging to her parents, one of which showed that she had been adopted. When she asked her parents about it, they told her that she had been adopted, as well as what they knew about her birthparents. Although it was many years later when she began to search for her birthparents, Maxine wondered from that point on who they were.
In 1929, she married Delmar Clair Kernan (1908-1979), the son of George Edward Kernan (1884-1960) and Maudena Elizabeth Stearns (1885-1936), and had two children: Deldalyn and William. However, their marriage ended in divorce in about 1948. It was about this time, moreover, that she began to search for her birth parents, and so she published an article in a local paper telling about her story. Eventually, she got a response, which was from her birthmother, Gladys, who had remarried by this point. Although she kept looking, she never did get the chance to meet her birthfather, who had moved back to Licking Co., Ohio where he was born and grew up. However, she did learn that he was of Native American roots.
In 1950, Maxine married again, to Oscar J. Smith (1902-1976), the son of James and Myrtle Smith. Following their marriage, they moved to Vancouver, Washington. Although they would have no children together, Oscar and Maxine were happily married for twenty-six years.
Following Oscar's death in 1976, Maxine moved to Springfield, Ohio where her daughter and her family were living. She lived there until 1983, when she moved with her daughter and her family to Maricopa Co., Arizona. Towards the end of her life, she lived in a retirement home. She passed away from pneumonia on the 19 September 1992 in Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix. Her body was taken back to Oregon to be buried with Oscar in Willamette National Cemetery.
