Julia studied chemistry at Oberlin College. Working in a woodshed behind their family home at 64 East College Street in Oberlin OH, Julia and her brother Charles Martin Hall discovered a method to electrolytically extract aluminum from alumina in February 1886. Her brother received a patent for the process and founded what later became the Aluminum Company of America, now Alcoa.
When Julia died she was living in Rochester, NY with her sister Louie. In 1937 as a memorial to her sister, Louie donated $200,000 to Highland Hospital for the construction of the Hall Memorial Building, solely to care for maternity patients.
