Born in Marion, Ohio on March 18, 1927 to Merle Foster Bailey and Wanda McRill Bailey, Red was one of ten children and is survived by two sisters: Avonelle Tillis of Green Bay, WI and Darlene Woodrum of Marion, OH; and a brother, William Bailey of Kearns, UT.
Red was a veteran of the Navy and served during WWII in the Pacific theatre. In his later years, he was active locally with veterans groups.
Red retired from Peabody Coal Company's Arizona Division in 1989 as Chief Electrical Engineer. In addition to working for Peabody Coal, Red held various positions throughout his life including construction on the launch pads at Cape Canaveral (FL), Deputy Sheriff (Ocala, FL), Fireman (Marion, OH), custom cabinet maker, chemical applicator, and even a ditch-digger for the gas company (Marion, OH). It has been said that Red could build and fix anything.
Red is survived by the love of his life, Rachel (Browning) Bailey of Evansville and originally of Seymour, IN. Together, they traveled the country, raised a family and lived life to its fullest. He is also survived by a daughter, Constance (Irv) Schnelker of New Haven, IN, a step-daughter Marcia Ahlbrand of Evansville, step-son Eric Ahlbrand of Oxford, IN and step-son Rick (Julie) Ahlbrand of Evansville. His grandchildren including Rob Williams of Denver, CO, Jeff Williams of New Haven, IN, Michanne Smiddy of Newburgh, IN, Benjamin Ahlbrand of Lafayette, IN, Justin Ahlbrand of Evansville, IN, Jacob Ahlbrand of Evansville, IN and Nicholas Ahlbrand of Oxford, IN; 5 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
His son, Rodger Dean Bailey of Jacksonville, FL in 1989, preceded Red in death.
A funeral service will be officiated by Steve Cherry at Burkholder Funeral Chapel in Seymour at 1:00 PM on Saturday, January 25. Military Graveside Rites conducted by the American Legion #89, V.F.W. #1925, D.A.V. #47 and Viet Nam #7 all of Seymour will follow services at Riverview Cemetery in Seymour.
Memorial contributions can be made to Centenary United Methodist Church in Evansville, IN or St. Jude's Hospital.
