US Congressman. A member of the Democratic Party, he served Rhode Island's 1st Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives from 1961 until 1989. The son of a mill worker, he attending Providence College and served with the United States Army during the Korean War. In 1952, he attained his law degree from Boston University and served with the Rhode Island State House of Representatives from 1952 until 1961. During his tenure in Congress, he supported such programs as "The Great Society" and Medicare. He served as Chairman of the Committee on Banking Finance and Urban Affairs and contributed to the lifting of regulations for financial institutions, which led to the widespread banking crisis during the late 1980s. He died of complications from kidney failure.
