Danish architect and most prolific designer of prominent buildings of his time. Architect of Frederiksstad District and rival of collegue Lauritz de Thurah, also a Royal Building Master.


Born Niels Eigtved in Egtved village in Skjoldenæsholms Birk on the island of Zealand to Mads Nielsen and Dorthe Hansdatter.

Trained as a gardener, he advanced to assistant at the Frederiksberg Palace Gardens circa 1720. As a royal gardening apprentice, he left the country in 1723 and worked in different parts of Germany. In 1725, he arrived in Warsaw, where he caught the eye of architect and draftsman Col. Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann, for whom he worked for several years.

Married Sophie Christine Walther, chambermaid to Princess Louise, on May 24, 1743 at Frederickborg Castle Chapel.

Together they had seven children, but only three lived to adulthood:
Christian Friderich Ludowig Eigtwedt (b.1744), Ludewig Eigtwedt (b.1745), Sophia Magdalena Eigtwedt (b.1747), Margaretha Sophia Eigtwedt (b.1749), Sophia Dorothea Charlotta Eigtwed (b. 1750), Sophia Christiana Eigtved (b. 1752), and Carolina Christiana Eigtved (b.1753).
