He was born in York County, the son of James & Mary Adams, and was the husband of Caroline Howell Jessop Adams, whom he married November 19, 1890. In 1860, he was a druggist's clerk living in York Borough. He stood 5'2" tall and had dark hair and hazel eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he first served 2 weeks with the Gibson Independent Militia Company during the Antietam crisis. He then enlisted January 27, 1863, with Co. A, 1st Pa Battalion, at the rank of 2nd lieutenant, and reenlisted with the 3-year organization (renamed the 187th Pa Inf). Promoted to 1st lieutenant March 18, 1864, and to captain on May 1, 1865. Honorably discharged August 3, 1865.
