Helen Nikels, 91 of Kearney, Nebraska, formerly of Ottawa, died Saturday, September 1, 2007 at St. Lukes Good Samaritan Village in Nebraska. Funeral services will be at 12:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Mueller Funeral Home in Ottawa with the Rev. Polly Klimson, Pastor, of First United Methodist Church in Ottawa officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Tuesday before the services at the funeral home.
Mrs. Nikels was born on November 28, 1915, in Caledonia, Missouri. to William and Lucinda (McMurtrey) Sutton. She graduated in 1932 from Caledonia High School at the age of 16. She married Andrew J. Nikels of Ottawa on January 5, 1937 in Chicago. They lived in Ottawa thereafter, where they raised their family. They were active in the First United Methodist Church in Ottawa and loved Ottawa High School sporting events.
She is survived by one daughter, Helen (Garin) VanDeMark of Fort Collins, Colorado; two sons, Robert (Kathy) Nikels of Westminster, South Carolina and Kenneth (Diane) Nikels of Kearney, Nebraska; 7 granddaughters, Melinda White, Beth Nikels, Amy Murphy, Judy Nikels-Reesha, Gina Nichols, Holly Nikels and Michelle Nikels; 3 great grandsons and 3 great granddaughters.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew, who died September 16, 1993; her parents; one sister, Ethelyn Stoner and three brothers, Kenneth, Otho and Noel Sutton.
